Step through the gates to enter the sunny courtyard of this bastide of the twelfth, fifteenth and seventeenth centuries, Château d'Ambrus.  These massive stone walls hide a lovely château with thirty rooms covering over 15,000 square feet of living space.

The donjon ~ tower ~ is a prominent feature of the château and is one of the oldest parts of the structure.  Once you enter, you will sense the history and importance of the château.  The parkland of twenty hectares borders on Europe's largest forest and is in a wild but peaceful valley.

Enter the château onto these beautiful ancient stone floors ~ a feature found throughout the castle.  A Medieval atmosphere surrounds you, but in more recent history this is also a château in Gascony, the land of The Three Musketeers.   Charles de Batz-Castelmore d'Artagnan was the real person on whom Alexandre Dumas based his  romantic novel, and he was born in Lupiac, only 68 kilometers south of Château d'Ambrus.  Visit the Musée d'Artagnan in the village.

The history of Château d'Ambrus is seen in its structure and architecture.  The massive stone walls and this magnificent stairway could tell many stories, we are certain.  Climb the stair from the entry hall and arrive at this first floor landing before proceeding up to the second floor ~ eight hundred years have gone before you in this very place.  We couldn't resist including this lovely stained glass window with a view of the pool!
