Manoir de Berthouville

A most appealing manoir awaits you in Normandy ~ a former hunting lodge built in 1652.  Its ten rooms are awash in sunlight and exquisitely decorated by their owner, Charles Spada, a well-respected interior designer from Boston.  The house is warm and welcoming, and as you approach it for the first time, you will be impressed by the fine landscaping, specimen trees and the carefully-tended expanse of lawns.

The manoir was built during the reign of Louis XIV in the manner of Louis XIII and is in the style of the Place des Vosges in Paris.  There are fireplaces on three floors (the salon and dining room fireplaces will be lit by caretaker; bedroom fireplaces are not used) and rooms are refined with French-style paneled walls, magnificent woodwork, period lighting and French furniture, and fine antiques.   Polished parquet floors and 12-foot high ceilings add to the elegance of this fine home.  French doors lead to the gardens and the five-acre park surrounding the manoir.  Guests will enjoy lounging outdoors on comfortable teak lawn furniture.

There are four bedrooms accommodating six to eight people quite comfortably.  Two of the rooms have half baths en suite, while there are two modern full baths with showers.  The guest rooms are comfortably furnished and spacious, all having large windows to take in the views and the lovely parkland.  Common rooms are equally as comfortable and pleasant including a formal salon and dining room, and there is a beautifully-renovated kitchen with modern conveniences.  There is also a full laundry, pantry and modern half bath on the ground floor, as well as a work area adjoining the kitchen with modern American-style appliances.

The region near the Manoir de Berthouville has so much to offer.  The hamlet of Berthouville does not have commerce, but the nearby towns of Bernay and Brionne have shops and offer very enjoyable open air markets on Saturday and Sunday respectively.  Day trips are easy for visiting Rouen, Lisieux, Pont l'Evéque, Deauville, Trouville and Honfleur.  The Eure département offers incredible landscapes just waiting for artists to capture them!  It is an ideal setting for sketching, watercolors and painting.  Also popular are horseback riding, tennis, golf, jogging, walking and cycling.  The manoir has two bicycles for the use of guests.

So, for your next (or first) visit to Normandy, do consider spending a week or longer at Manoir de Berthouville with your family or friends.  You will find that the authenticity and charm of this 17th century residence creates the ideal home away from home ~ in grand style and elegance!
