In the fourteenth century, there were five châteaus in Leugny ~ the first of which was Château la Borde. It evolved into a walled manoir, and today only the northernmost part remains ~ the Pavillon. The first owner of La Borde in 1363 was Jean de la Rivière. In 1582 it became La Bussière, named for the Lord of La Borde, who lived at this location for a long time. Eventually, in the 16th century, the current 'château' was built to replace the original fortification at the time the nearby châteaus Brandon and Badineries were being demolished. La Borde was originally a structure with four towers: a dovecote and walls on three sides that created a courtyard facing west looking over the village of Leugny and the River Ouanne Valley. Today, only the dovecote and the north and west towers are still standing.
The Guest House is in the center of the estate where the buildings retain their sixteenth century ambiance with heavy exposed beams and tiled floors. Guests will find them exceptionally cozy and thoughtfully furnished with high quality bedding for a perfect night's rest. Of course, despite the centuries-old character in every room, today's conveniences are present to ensure that each guest has the best of both worlds.
Just recently, the gardens at La Borde received recognition and the classification 'Jardin Remarquable'. The owners worked for fourteen years on their seventeen acres of land to create six distinctive gardens: Lime Avenue, the organic vegetable garden with herbs, fruits and vegetables, the rose garden, orchard and Jardin Français. The estate also features fifty different species of trees ~ an arboretum with each species labeled. In 2011, the Orangerie was completed with new plantings and relaxation areas for their guests in all weather.
This is a rare and unique holiday getaway where vacationers can enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, the ultimate in luxurious accommodations, and fine breakfasts and dinners. Your hosts are waiting to welcome you!
