||We have the great pleasure of
welcoming Moulin de Fresquet
to the au Château
family. This 700 year-old mill in the bucolic département of the Lot near
the border with the Dordogne affords its bed and breakfast guests
refined accommodations in a unique
setting. It is only a short walk to the town of Gramat, dating
back to the Middle Ages, where you will find all services, shops,
restaurants and an historic 16th century clock tower.
Rocamadour and the Padirac Chasm are just two of many interesting
attractions nearby for you to explore.
The Moulin de Fresquet was built in the 14th century and was part of the grange of the Cistercian monks of Figeac. In the 18th century large scale improvements were made by the miller and his family so they could live on site. Heat was made possible by the large fireplace. Finally, several outbuildings were constructed which completed the estate in the 19th century. The current owners took possession of Moulin de Fresquet in 1987 ~ a place completely abandoned and in ruins. Despite its pitiful state, the Ramelots were touched by the romantic site and the remains of the elegant mill house. They spent three years renovating the mill, caring for it as it deserved to be cared for, and in 1990 they began accepting their first guests who were travelers and other pilgrims on the Route de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle.
The Moulin is set in the forest and is comprised of several exceptional stone buildings surrounded by a lovely landscaped park ~ ideal for tranquil strolls along the ancient mill stream. Upon arrival, guests are given a tour of the grounds to familiarize them with the breakfast room, library, salons and other places they can gather during their stay. Monsieur Ramelot takes them to their room or suite to be sure they know where to find everything from extra pillows to the hair dryer. The rooms are decorated with history in mind, and many portraits of the owner's ancestors add to the ambiance and authenticity of this ancient mill.
A stay at Moulin de Fresquet is peaceful and rejuvenating. The rooms and suites are spacious, comfortable and inviting, while its excellent location allows for a wide variety of day trips to explore the numerous grottoes, enchanting villages, and visit open air markets. The Lot is a beautiful region of France with a lush, green landscape, winding rivers, dramatic hillside towns and larger towns such as Cahors. This is also wine country for those interested in sampling the popular 'black wine' of Cahors (the newly-popular Malbec ) and have winery visits and tours in the Lot. It is a region filled with history, beauty and an endless list of things to do and see, and Moulin de Fresquet is a perfect home base from which to begin each day.
Breakfast at Moulin de Fresquet will meet everyone's expectations. Not only are there fresh baked goods ~ croissants, breads, brioche ~ but cheese, ham, soft-cooked eggs, homemade jams and preserves, fresh fruit, juice, chocolate, coffee and tea are also offered each morning. Gather in the dining room with other guests to make new acquaintances and share experiences, or take your breakfast out to your own table on the terrace surrounded by flowers and in view of the mill stream. Your hosts can answer questions about the region, make suggestions about what you might want to do or see, and even recommend or make reservations for your dinner that evening in Gramat.
Do consider a stay at Moulin de Fresquet. We are certain you will have many long-lasting, pleasant memories of your time here, and you will want to return again as we hope to do.
