Hilltop Retreat with Incredible Views ! Château d'Alogny Entrance Garden We've visited Château d'Alogny in the Vienne département of the Poitou-Charentes more than once. Each time, the gardens are more beautiful and the views more incredible. The rural location endows a peace upon this place ~ a tranquility that can only make one's stay closer to perfect than hoped. Dr John Cooke and his wife, Joyce, take full advantage of their château. On our most recent visit it was filled with friends participating in a writers' workshop. They divide their time between their home in the Vienne (near the château) and California with annual visits to Bali where they are deeply involved in the Bali Children's Project, a charitable foundation dedicated to providing educational opportunities for disadvantaged young people in Bali. For further information about this organization, you can visit their web site at http://www.hidden-worlds.com/bcp.php. But,
back to the château. Recently updated, Château
d'Alogny
now has five double guest rooms
and four full bathrooms, four WCs and sleeping accommodations consisting of four additional beds in the family room. It comfortably accommodates ten to twelve people. It is a very cozy country home, complete with spacious salon and dining room and a very functional kitchen. Perhaps the only drawback is the stone circular stair which is really not suitable for the elderly or very young children. Guests will appreciate more than the creature comforts of the château. They will also love the swimming pool and the seating area in the garden allowing them to daydream as they take in the distant vistas. It is truly a spectacular location. Nearby,
day trips can include the interesting city of Poitiers, the high tech
of
Futuroscope, the amazing port of La Rochelle, and the lovely town of La
Roche Posay with its casinos and spa. Local shops and supermarchésare
easily accessible, and market days at Châtellerault (Thursday),
St-Savin
(Friday) Chauvigny and Le Blanc (Saturday), and La Roche-Posay
(Tuesday)
are not to be missed. The Benedictine Abbey of Fontgombault, just
25 kms southeast of Alogny along the Creuse River, will welcome
visitors
with Gregorian chants sung by the monks. Those interested in the
grand châteaux of the Loire Valley will be happy to know they are
but an hour's drive away. The seacost is about 90 minutes from
the
château.
