Domaine des Faures

The Dordogne region of southwest France has always drawn visitors for its amazing prehistoric sites and lovely villages.  The Dordogne River is a main attraction as well.  Domaine des Faures is a special place ~ a former farm set on 100 acre of meadows and woods ~ a true 'getaway' from twenty-first century life.

Domaine des Faures was once an important bastide domaine with a connection to the amazing Château de Biron.  It was partially constructed from the stone of an abandoned church and the main section of the house dates back to the year 1673.  It is a lovely manor house with a fine history.  It was once a refuge for Huguenots, it welcomed migrant families from Brittany, hid soldiers during World War II, and harbored refugees from Alsace. Situated on a high point in the region, the 100-acre domaine has a small herd of organic cattle as well as being a lovely haven for wildlife and wild flowers.

Today's owners have meticulously renovated the property, including the installation of geothermal heating, in order to assure modern-day comforts that blend well with its centuries-old history.  Local artisans were employed to help in the renovation.  Light pours into all the rooms due to windows on at least two sides; fires crackle in the dining and drawing rooms in the cooler months so that guests can enjoy a warm and cozy stay.

Guest rooms have high ceilings, large windows and comfortable beds, providing their occupants restful retreats from their days of sightseeing.  All bedding is hypoallergenic, and only Egyptian cotton sheets are used. The owners tell us that peace and tranquility are at the heart of Domaine des Faures.  Out in the garden, guests will find several areas to sit, relax or chat with their fellow guests or traveling companions ~ perhaps they will select a spot in the hazelnut grove, by an ancient cedar tree or under an acacia.  The north-facing terrace offers views over the wonderful bastide village of Monpazier, and the domaine's inviting swimming pool hides in its own hedged garden not far from the manor.  Weekly rental of the domaine is also possible.  This rental includes electricity, water, heat, linens and local tourist taxes.

A visit to the Périgord is always a happy experience; add to that an authentic destination such as Domaine des Faures, and you are definitely going to experience the best the region has to offer.  We have designated Domaine des Faures a 'green' member of au Château, as the emphasis is on an organic and environmentally-friendly lifestyle indicated by the geothermal heating, hypoallergenic bedding and the small herd of cattle mentioned above.  We are sure all who stay here will not only enjoy the charm and location but will appreciate the extra effort put forth to make this an planet-friendly place to stay.
