Our Featured B&B: Le Clos de la Garenne in the Charente-Maritime Le Clos de la Garenne The Charente-Maritime département of France is
brimming with things to do and places to visit ~ from the Île de
Ré, La Rochelle and Rochefort to the Île d'Oléron, Royan
and the shores of the Gironde Estuary. Inland is the city of Saintes, known for its
Gallo-Roman, Medieval and classic history, where
you can find the ruins of a Roman amphitheatre and aqueduct as well
as remnants of the third century ramparts. Today, it is a
bustling city filled with parks and people who love living there.
At the other end of the spectrum, but with as much history, is the tiny
village of Surgères
occupied since Neolithic times and a fortress against Norman invaders
in the Middle Ages. And don't miss the Marais Poitevin with
its 8000 kilometers of waterways to explore by boat.
Equally as important, of course, is where to stay ~ a place that provides the perfect base for day trips around the region. We suggest Le Clos de la Garenne, a peaceful, comfortable and convenient bed and breakfast with friendly and helpful hosts in the commune of Puyravault. They also offer three self-catering gîtes to rent that will accommodate from 3 to 6 people. Chambre d'Amis The self-catering cottage
Main house salon
Chambre l'Aunisienne
Dinner is offered several evenings
per week and breakfast is included in the price of B&B rooms.
Also, there is access for the disabled. Enjoy the billiards room
or relax on the terrace. Le Clos de la Garenne is a peaceful
retreat with warm, welcoming hosts and very reasonable rates. We
highly recommend it!

our Newest Member: Relais des Trois
Châteaux Relais des Trois Châteaux, Cour-Cheverny
In the
charming village of Cour-Cheverny, an extension of the town of Cheverny
in the département of
Loir-et-Cher,
is the delightful Relais
des Trois Châteaux and its restaurant Les Trois Marchands.
With 35 en suite guest rooms, the Relais can offer travelers the ideal base while touring the Loire Valley. Air conditioned rooms, elevators, free WiFi and Internet access, flat screen TVs, a mini-bar in every guest room and hairdryers will add to your comfort and convenience away from home. We dined at the restaurant in September, and the food and service were excellent. Early evening on the dining terrace was a nice experience as we enjoyed fresh cod and salmon, beverages and profiteroles for dessert. We spent a short time afterward with owners Bernard and Véronique Gattolliat who until recently also owned Château du Breuil a short drive away. The hotel is the perfect venue for a wedding of up to 50 guests, business meetings and seminars for groups from 15 to 100, and cocktail receptions for up to 120 people. There is ample off street parking. Nearby, be sure to visit Château de Cheverny (and its golf course), the grand châteaux at Blois and Chambord, or schedule a hot air balloon ride over the amazing Loire Valley. Of course, the area is rich with vineyards producing exceptional Loire wines, and visits can be arranged during your stay. Contact us for more information, to make a reservation or to ask questions.
Villes et Villages de France . . . we hope to tempt you to visit these marvelous placeswhen you are roaming through the French countryside. La Gacilly ~ Morbihan, Brittany A truly charming Breton
village, La Gacilly is reminiscent of another Morbihan town,
Rochefort-en-Terre. On the occasion of our visit there was an
international photography exhibit (see example below) being held
from June to the end of September. Tourists and locals crowded
the streets that are primarily pedestrian zones, and restaurants filled
quickly at lunch time.
Detail of photo of
ochre mine in Rustrel, closed since 1992 La Gacilly is perhaps best known
for being the home of cosmetics company Yves Rocher, whose founder was born
there and was the mayor from 1962 to 2008. Since then his son,
Jacques, has assumed the position. Our visit reminded us how very pleasant Brittany is ~ from the far reaches of Finistère to the Normandy border and from La Manche to the Côte des Mégalithes and the Atlantic ~ it never disappoints. [Photos copyrighted Cold Spring Press. All Rights Reserved.]
LOIRE
VALLEY WINES
In a FRANCE
On Your Own newsletter in 2014 we reviewed a book by
Alice Feiring (Winner of the James Beard Foundation Award) entitled The Battle for Wine and Love or How I
Saved the World from Parkerization.
She wrote about the effect Robert Parker has had on the wines of the world as she discovered that all wines were beginning to taste alike, losing their identity through manipulation and technology. She went on a quest to find artisanal wines still made in traditional ways to avoid being over-fruity, over-sweet and overbearing. Her happiest moments were in the Loire Valley of France where she met many vintners. Alice went on to tell us that the Loire is France's third largest wine producing region, and she wished the world would tire of the fruity, oaky wines and would come to appreciate what the Loire has to offer. The Loire is the home to the Cabernet Franc grape [photo left], the regal black fruit producing the region's Chinon wine. But, it is also essential in the production of the Bordeaux blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Carménère wines ~ and she mentioned that Mr Parker 'reviled' the Cabernet France grape, despite his love for Bordeaux wines! For that reason he doesn't visit the Loire vintners, and they are more than fine with that. No one will tell them to add alcohol, using reverse osmosis, add tannins, yeast, enzymes, saw dust, oak chips and so much more. Not in the Loire! Forget the 100 point system; a wine is only good if you like it! The white wines of the Loire include the crisp Muscadet and the delightful Vouvray, the latter from the eastern Loire region of the same name and made from the Chenin Blanc grape. Muscadet is from the western Loire near Nantes, is produced more than any other Loire wine and made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape brought to the Loire at the request of King Louis XIV [photo right in flower]. Its name comes from its 'musky' taste. Both are light and refreshing and are particularly enjoyable in the summer ~ or all year 'round! We recently spent many days in the Loire and enjoyed local wines with meals. None disappointed, and it was good to know that vignerons surrounding us in all directions are making wine the same way their ancestors did. Keep up with Alice on her web blog, The Feiring Line ~ The Natural Wine Newsletter, as she travels to pitch in with wine harvests, visit and interview winemakers, or speak to groups around the US and elsewhere. Where to stay:
News
from Our Members . . . Château d'Agel, our featured rental, has
from July 13 to 20 and July 20 to 27 as well as August 24 to September
7 available at this time. They will also consider booking a
wedding in late August / early September if a full week (Saturday to
Saturday) is booked. But, don't wait too long as these openings
won't last.
We
are sorry to bid adieu to Château
des Tesnières in Brittany, a place we truly loved and a
valued member of our site since 2004. The owners have sold the
château, and the buyer will not be continuing the bed and
breakfast business. We wish Seibren and John much success and
happiness in their future.
In
July Jean-François Delort, owner of Château de
Saint-Martory in the
Haute-Garonne of southern France, attended the Eurobike tradeshow, the
world's leading trade fair for the cycling industry, in
Germany. He was accompanied by Chris, the chateau's partner for
cycling groups. They saw amazing new products that will
revolutionize the industry ~ in particular the new E race bike at LOOK
Cycle.
They are hoping to have some great bikes available for their guests in the near future. In the meantime, they are working with many partners and have a special offer for cycling fans: dedicated storage space for bicycles, with all the necessary tools, and full board stays organized with the help of their local private chef, who does an incredible job customizing menus around cyclists' needs and dietary restrictions. The château welcomes cyclists from around the world who come to ride in the Tour de France stages that have made or undone champions, but also in the nearby Petites Pyrénées which offer less physical routes. Chateau de Saint-Martory is the only high-end venue between Pau and Foix where center-based Pyrénées cycling is organized. Château de Saint-Martory, on the banks of the River Garonne, has become a reference for cycling fans. They would be delighted to welcome you one day to their beautiful Chateau for a unique experience mixing high-level rides, gastronomy and lifestyle. [For

Scallops We are sharing this recipe directly

its
news of daily life in her Normandy village, what produce is now in
season, and all those wonderful recipes to try at home. Of

Normandy, Paris or back home in the US! 1 pound (500g) Brussels sprouts, trimmed (If they are larger than a marble, cut them in half) ¼ cup (60ml) water 1 tablespoon unsalted butter Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 bay leaf 20 sprigs lemon thyme 1 large clove garlic, green germ removed, cut in thin lengthwise slices 8 to 12 sea scallops, shucked if necessary, trimmed and quickly rinsed of sand The zest from ½ lemon, minced 1/4 cup (60ml) heavy, non ultra-pasteurized cream Fleur de sel – for garnish
1. Melt the butter in a large, heavy skillet over medium heat. When it is foaming, add the Brussels sprouts, shake the pan so they are coated with butter, and add the water. Sprinkle generously with salt and pepper, and lay the garlic and the herbs on top. When the water is boiling, shake the pan, cover, reduce the heat to low, and cook until the Brussels sprouts are nearly tender through, about 8 minutes, shaking the pan occasionally. 2. While the Brussels sprouts are cooking, slice the scallops in half, horizontally. 3. When the Brussels sprouts are nearly cooked remove the cover and increase the heat to medium-high. Shake the pan and flip the Brussels sprouts, then add the scallops and cook, shaking the pan and turning the scallops, just until all the liquid in the pan has evaporated, the Brussels sprouts are beginning to turn golden and the scallops are nearly cooked through, about 3 minutes. 4. Add the lemon zest, shake the pan and flip the Brussels sprouts and the scallops, then pour in the cream and remove the pan from the heat. Shake the pan so that the cream is blended with the rest of the ingredients. Taste for seasoning, then transfer the Brussels sprouts and the scallops to a warmed serving dish or evenly divide it among two warmed plates (for a main course) or four warmed plates (for a first course.). Season lightly with fleur de sel and serve immediately. 2 to 4 servings Bon appétit!
