An 11th Century Jewel

View in the SpringChanzé and vineyards

The Château is situated in the wine region of Côteaux de Layon, a part of the larger Anjou wine region famous for its Rosé d'Anjou.  Exploring the vineyards of some of the 30 appellations (AOC) is highly recommended ~ the Anjou and Saumur vineyards are still producing wines the traditional way as they have successfully done for centuries.  The Loire wines are gentle, pleasant, charming and light in a wide range of styles ~ dry or sweet white wines either still or sparkling, rosés that are light and fruity, and red wines.  The Côteaux de Layon is an elegant, sweet wine.  As with many wines, the Loire wines are best paired with the cuisine of the region.  In this area pork, chicken and the seafood of the nearby Atlantic Ocean, as well as trout from the rivers, are perfect with the local vintages.

Heated swimming poolLe Cave This inviting swimming pool with the château in the background is a 21st century touch to an historic Medieval château.  Also worth a visit is the château's Cave, located underground by the Communal Lounge and not far from the pool.  It is a refreshing cool spot on a hot summer's day where you and your guests can relax and try a glass of local wine or arrange for a tailor-made wine tasting ~ un dégustation.

Enjoy exploring the grounds of the château from strolls along the River Layon up the granite steps to the château courtyard or to the ancient carriage shed.  The estate and its park are brimming with lush plantings, fine trees and a garden just bursting with flowers from May to July.  The Loire Valley is one of France's leading agricultural regions; La Loire itself is the first river to receive the designation 'World Heritage Site' from UNESCO.  The valley is home to spectacular parks, churches, abbeys, manor houses, villages and, of course, châteaux!  You will walk in the footsteps of history where, for four centuries, the political, economic and artistic crowns rested on the heads of three ruling houses in Anjou.
