It
is our great pleasure to include among our prestigious members the
grand Château
de Courcy on Normandy's Cotentin Peninsula. This beautiful
château and its gardens are listed Historique Monuments by the
National Trust of France. Built in the 17th century, it was in
the 18th century that the Marquis de Courcy transformed the interior
and grounds., The Gatellier family acquired the estate at the end of
the 19th century and it has remained in the family to the present
time. During World War II the château was
occupied first by the Wehrmacht and then the SS. Unlike the
neighboring Château de Fontenay, Château de Courcy avoided
destruction by the Allies on D-Day as it was a meeting point
for their paratroopers and, as it changed hands between the
Allies and the Germans 9 times in only 3 days, neither side knew who
was occupying it at any given time. In 1944, before the onset of
winter, Professor Jean Gatellier made needed repairs to the roof and
façade to protect it from the elements. One US Navy
shell did make a direct hit on the château, and today it serves
as a counterweight for the kitchen roasting spit!
The château is a delightful property to rent for
a group of friends or family to experience the beautifully and
authentically appointed rooms. Bedrooms and reception rooms are
decorated with richly carved and gilded paneling, most with double
exposure to the gardens and views of the sea beyond. There are
two master suites as well as another double, 2 single rooms and a twin
bedroom. The bedrooms are spacious and comfortable and the
bathrooms have all modern amenities including hair dryers. You can explore this historic region of France from the
military, fishing, yachting, and shipbuilding port of Cherbourg ~ also
a cross-channel ferry port ~ to the D-Day landing beach of Utah. Or
visit the town of Ste-Mère Église, the first town
liberated by the Allies in World War II and equally renowned for the US
paratrooper, John Steele, whose parachute caught on the church
steeple. He hung there for two hours pretending to be dead until
cut down by the occupying troops and held prisoner. Escaping, he
rejoined the 505th Parachute Infantry Division. There are several
professional tour organizations for those who prefer not to go out on
one's own. Inquire when making your reservations. * * * Book this lovely château by contacting au Château and mention Courcy in the subject line. * * * |
