On June 20, 1944, the
79th American Infantry Division liberated Yvetot-Bocage, and General
Collins made Château de Servigny his headquarters. Historic
events played
a role in Château de Servigny to the point that a treaty bears
its
name: the Treaty of
Servigny marked
the Surrender of
Cherbourg
to the Allies on June 26, 1944 ~ the only peace treaty signed during
WWII by the Americans and Germans. It was in this room at 4PM on
that
day and at this
desk
that the Treaty was signed by General Joseph Lawton Collins and
General
Karl Wilhelm von Schlieben. Interesting photographs of that
important
time
adorn
the walls. This room is part of the private residence in the
château,
but guests may visit it if accompanied by the owners as their guides.
Below are photographs taken at that time in the
château's history. The château is known as the "D-Day
château".
