The fine Eglise de Sommesnil
at the entrance, the Medici Gates dating from the time the château
was a royal hunting lodge, the Maison de Chasse, and other buildings that
line the wall along the road all add to the interest and provide a sense
of the history of this fine estate.
The château
at night is quite dramatic. It was built in the 18th century and
is a grand residence, perfect today for those who want to rent it on a
weekly basis to immerse themselves in French château life.
The château
sits above the valley in the region known as the Pays de Caux, a
large part of this département that is a chalk plateau north
of the Seine estuary and reaching to the cliffs on the Channel's Alabaster
Coast (Côte d'Albâtre). Since 2009, this coast has been
designated a Natura 2000 site ~ an ecological network of protected
areas in the European Union.
