Burgundy
is not just vineyards -- it is extraordinarily beautiful countryside
peppered
with delightful small villages, criss-crossed with streams and rivers,
made more interesting by green rolling hills and small forests and
offering
travelers the comfort of magnificent estates such as this one in the
Nièvre.
Château de Villette is a classical private residence set on an
incredible
500 acres in the Morvan hills of western Burgundy sixty kilometers from
Beaune.
The parkland and setting are said to be earlier examples of the work of the famed André le Notre, renowned for his designs at Chantilly and Versailles. Guests will find themselves enjoying the formal gardens and terraces, centuries-old landscapes, running crystal streams, ponds, lakes, forests and hedged fields -- and astonished by the unending panoramic views. The accommodations offered are recently redecorated rooms incorporating exquisite linens and fabrics, luxurious beds, furniture suited to the period and en suite bathrooms with all modern amenities. New in 2012 is the completely renovated 18th century cottage for two, Maison Escargot, offering a spacious living area with open fireplace and an open kitchen and dining area, a bedroom with a king-size four poster bed and a bathroom with antique tub and shower. A convertible sofa in the living room will sleep an additional two people. A small private garden and private entrance make this a lovely private getaway. Of course, the pool and tennis courts are available to its occupants during their stay. There is a television and access to the pool. This cottage can be rented by the night or weekly as a self-catering retreat. The second cottage, La Grenouillère, welcomed guests since August of 2012. It has three bedrooms - two doubles and a twin - bathroom with antique tub and shower, spacious living with an open fireplace, dining corner, television, access to the pool and a southfacing view over the lake and the Morvan countryside. A dishwasher, washing machine and dryer are wonderful conveniences in this cottage. Dinner , with menus devoted to fresh local meat, vegetables and dairy products, is prepared in the sixteenth century kitchen and can definitely be categorized as Burgundian "haute cuisine". Guests are then served by candlelight in the grand eighteenth century formal dining room, accompanied by carefully selected wines found on the finest wine lists in France -- wines from the nearby Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise. The château's host and hostess, Coen and Catherine Stork, are proud of their cellars containing wines they have personally selected for their quality and authenticity. Whether travelers are seeking the comfort and convenience of a bed and breakfast or are interested in renting the château with a helpful staff for cooking, cleaning and laundry service (available a limited number of weeks during the year), Château de Villette is a perfect choice. The chambres d'hôtes offers six bedrooms, combinations of which can become three suites, all with en suite bathrooms. Two additional guest rooms become availble when renting the entire château. Guests have the use of a sparkling swimming pool and a tennis court on the estate, and can spend their days visiting the local antique shops and historic sites, touring vineyards, playing golf at nearby courses, visiting picturesque villages of the area for shopping, seeing Roman churches or browsing the stalls on market day. Most important of all is the personal attention and care guests receive from their host and hostess -- a reminder that this is a family home where all are welcomed as friends and encouraged to partake in château life and explore the wonders of the region. |
