Château de la Bourgonie

Time spent in the Dordogne of France's southwest is never forgotten.  There is a special quality of life and strong sense of history in this region that affects all who come here.  The region's prehistoric history is most apparent in the well-preserved sites ~ the Grotte de Lascaux is an important example with its paintings by early man ~ and that the Dordogne is considered the birthplace of modern (Cro Magnon) man.

Among the treasures of the Dordogne is the spectacular and enduring Château de la Bourgonie, a Listed Historic Monument, set on thirty hectares of meadows, woodlands and lawns and the home of the Comte and Comtesse de Commarque.  In the guest wing of the château are spacious salons, six en suite bedrooms, a fine kitchen with a fireplace and a beautiful dining room. The château, well suited for up to eleven guests seeking peace and country solitude with convenience to so many attractions, offers guests privacy and their own self-catering accommodations with private gardens, terraces and the use of the swimming pool.

The château is located in the 'Black Périgord', a mere twenty minutes from Sarlat and a half hour from Bergerac and Périgueux in the 'triangle of Prehistory'.  The structure is comprised of both fourteenth-century round and square towers, a fifteenth century gatehouse, and an eighteenth-century wing in the style of Mansart.  All the pieces of this amazing château fit together in harmonious Périgordian style.  Built upon a high rocky outcrop and nestled between the Dordogne Valley and the Bessede Forest, the views are endless.  There are pedestrian pathways into the woods ~ a place where deer families can be found and where hunting is not allowed ~ and the beautiful salt-filtered swimming pool is situated on a south-facing terrace with more lovely views.

Medieval in appearance on the outside, the château may seem somewhat daunting when you first come upon it.  However, step across the threshold to find an interior that is warm and inviting offering comfort in every room.  The décor is tasteful, incorporating modern conveniences with fine antiques and classical furniture.  The barrel vaulted ceilings in the ground floor rooms provide a coziness while reminding one that this is an historic château with a long and interesting history.  Six amazing guest rooms ~ two on the ground floor and four on the first floor ~  are tastefully appointed with fine furnishings, seating, comfortable beds, writing desks and most are en suite.  Welcome baskets in the bathrooms include shampoo, soap, perfumes, etc.  The salons offer a games table, a flat-screen television, seating for everyone, and a fine cantou stone fireplace.  Very impressive are the kitchen that includes an American refrigerator, coffee and Nespresso machines, a Babycook and a food processor and the dining room with stone walls, ceilings and, like all of the ground floor, traditional pisée paving stones underfoot.

For your next vacation in southwest France, consider the Black Périgord and the magnificent Château de la Bourgonie for your holiday destination.  You will be met with a welcome basket of fruit, a book and local specialties.  Wonderful memories will be made as you make it your home away from home for a week or longer.
