Château de La Meynardie façade

We are very pleased to include among our members the lovely Château de La Meynardie located in the north of the Dordogne département of Nouvelle-Aquitaine.  The château is very convenient to so many of the prehistoric and Medieval attractions of the Périgord vert as well as the Route Richard Coeur de Lion.  La Meynardie dates back to the late 16th century and early 17th century and built in the Louis XIII style during the time of Henri IV.  Its elegant appearance comes from an unbroken row of battlements, stone pediment dormers, and pavilions on the high slate roof.  The estate also included the forge of Meynardie on the River Valise, which in the 18th century produced more than 500 quintal of iron.  It belonged to the Croissant family, and was passed on through marriage to the Lord of Meynardie, and then to the Count of Villoutreys, most of whom are buried in the castle chapel.

At the time of the Revolution, the family emigrate and the castle was put up for auction and ownership passed to three families, the last of which did extensive interior work and created a French park and stables for his hunt.  The estate was finally purchased in 1941 by the family of the current owners who made it a theater of the Mission Alsos during World War II ~ an intelligence gathering operation to learn first-hand how close Germany was to developing its own atomic weapons. One Colonel Pash wrote a book, The Also Mission, in which he speaks at length about La Meynardie as an 'impressive old castle".

The estate includes the vast family home, an entry courtyard bordered by two outbuildings, a huge esplanade terrace that creates a beautiful park landscaped in the French manner overlooking meadows and forests.  The owners are happy to organize a large party in the park for special occasions.  Also in the park is the Orangerie, built in the 19th century, which has been transformed into an independent house.

Château de La Meynardie and the Orangerie can comfortably accommodate 23 people who will enjoy a heated swimming pool and fine new tennis court in the heart of the large organic vegetable garden.  Adults and children alike will enjoy their holidays here while being at the crossroads of many famous touristic and gastronomic places of interest.  On site, the  housekeeper will welcome you and assist you during your stay to make your time at the château comfortable and enjoyable.

There are nine guest rooms in the château and two in the Orangerie, several of which are en suite.  The château has been decorated in a refined manner, offering several reception rooms, a large wood-paneled library, a spacious dining room with a warm atmosphere, and the majestic entrance hall with stone staircase.  The main kitchen and a well-equipped back kitchen will make this self-catering château the perfect place to hone your French cooking skills.  Reserve your week or holiday weekend at Château de La Meynardie soon.  You will find it an extraordinary experience leaving you with cherished memories for years to come.
