Les Vieux Murs

The Old Walls - the remaining Medieval stone walls in the garden gave Les Vieux Murs its name, but this beautiful and welcoming château was built at the beginning of the twentieth century.  Enter the charming village of Souvigny, and turn right onto rue Maris Delaume. It is at number 11 that you will find the beautiful gate and entrance to this inviting chambres d'hôtes.  It is a very pleasant surprise!  Take the long, winding driveway up to the pretty and elegant home of Michel and Laurence Louyot where you will immediately be greeted by your hosts as we were.  They will remain attentive and helpful throughout your stay - always there to greet you when you return from your daily excursions and eager to provide recommendations of what to do and see in the their lovely part of France. Your stay will be memorable for many reasons: among them your lovely room and bath, the delicious breakfasts, and, most of all, the absolute charm of your hosts.

Located only two hundred yards from the center of historic Souvigny, the Neo-Classical manor was built in 1902 in the center of a five-acre park, copying Le Petit Trianon at Versailles.  Les Vieux Murs, since its construction, was one of the most modern and original architectural examples in the Bourbon area.  The current owners began its complete restoration in 2008, keeping faithful to its original design while adding all the modern comforts of the twenty-first century.  Most impressive is the paneled reception room with seven meter high ceilings and the elegant oak stairway to the first floor.  Guest rooms are spacious, calm and tastefully appointed in lovely fabrics and colors, each with its own en suite modern bathroom.

The park deserves special attention.  Century-old specimen trees and rolling lawns offer a tranquil place for walks and enjoying some quiet time.   Among the trees are Sequoias, birches, American walnuts, cedars, limes and many others.  There is a spring-fed pond to enjoy and perhaps for fishing!  For summer guests, there is a lovely heated swimming pool in the back garden.  One of the special features of Les Vieux Murs is the privacy and peacefulness of the estate, which is not visible from the outside yet is so convenient to the village and the many attractions that the Allier has to offer.

Souvigny is an important town not to be overlooked.  Aimard, the first known ancestor of the Bourbons gave the abbot, Bernon of Cluny, his villa in Souvigny and the Priory of Saints Peter and Paul. This took place in 916.  The fourth and fifth abbots of Cluny were buried at Souvigny, and it always had influence in the Pays Bourbonnais.  The priory church became a stopping point on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela and is a fine example of the marriage of Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles.  It was altered several times by the Dukes of Bourbon who introduced Gothic architecture to the heart of France.  Especially interesting are the many Romanesque churches in the villages, most only a short drive from Les Vieux Murs, and the nearby small city of Moulins on the banks of the River Allier dating from the year 990.

We promise that a stay at Les Vieux Murs in Souvigny will be one of the highlights of your visit to France.  Michel and Laurence are waiting to meet you!
