Château
de la Caillotière is a jewel of 19th century architecture,
having
been built over 200 years ago by the French Ambassador, Augustin de
Vernouillet,
an ancestor of the present owner. Its name derives from the
quails
that were once hunted on the estate. The rose-colored brick
accented
generously by white tuffeau stone creates a beauty that will take your
breath away. Especially pretty are the wrought iron railings at
the
front stairs and balcony.
The château park is over seventy acres of woodland, lawns and gardens. The jardin à la française at the front slopes down to the pond where guests can go fishing if they would like ~ or they can just stroll around the pond and enjoy the peace and tranquility it affords. There is another pond as well as a reflecting pool on the property. There are several dependencies including an arboretum with over 250 rare species of bushes and small trees selected for the splendid flowers they produce. A walled kitchen garden contains flowers grown by the gardener, and guests are welcomed to pick them. Bedrooms in the château offer authentic French décor using period wall coverings and antique furniture. Large windows provide views of the estate and allow ample sunlight into the rooms. Four of the bedrooms are en suite, and all bathrooms are spacious with all the modern conveniences. The Salon Rouge on the ground floor serves as a games and music room or just a very pleasant place to relax. The Grand Salon has rich paneling and sixteenth century Gobelins tapestries, a marble fireplace, a crystal chandelier, family portraits, fine antiques and a Spanish carpet. Guests will be provided wood for the fireplace if they desire. Other rooms include a small kitchen off the dining room and a recently remodeled larger kitchen with all new stainless steel appliances. A pleasant dining area off the larger kitchen is perfect for breakfast, serves also as a small library, and has doors out to the gardens. The formal dining room is exquisite and spacious, seating up to twenty-two people at a long table. Tapestries and yellow silk damask cover the walls making the room very inviting and warm. There are many activities to enjoy outdoors at the château, including riding the horse or pony, playing tennis on the new court, swimming in the new pool, or trying your hand at pétanque (boules), badminton or table tennis. There are bicycles to borrow, too. For those interested in cooking classes, two options are available: the owners can organize classes with Chef Tempereau in his workshop or you can have classes at the château with chef Astrid de Beauregard who runs à la table d'Astrid. Wine aficionados will find many Loire Valley appellations to enjoy from Muscadet to the lesser-known but exquisite Côteaux du Layon produced south of Angers. There are Anjou, Bourgueil, Pouilly Fumé, Sancerre, Saumur, Touraine, and Vouvray wines in the region offering visitors a very wide variety from which to choose. There is much to see and enjoy in the Loire Valley and the Pays de la Loire. We hope you will contact us soon for your reservations at Château de la Caillotière. * * * Book this lovely château by contacting au Château and mention 'Caillotière' in the subject line. * * * |
